One of my very favorite things on earth is a good display. A shop window, a well-merchandised table, a refrigerated case. It makes me go ga-ga in the same way that my other strange preoccupations — paper goods, things in miniature, ginger anything — make me swoon. As far as presentation goes, Japan basically kicks the ass of the rest of the world. They take it to a whole new level, making it an art form.

One of my favorite things about Asia are the food floors of major department stores. It is not difficult to walk away with bags filled with a large collection of $2 mystery foods, some of which will not taste delicious, but they will look pretty on the shelf.

On this day, we were in search of desserts for a garden party. A clear success.

i can’t remember the name of the department store that we went to in tokyo – it was one of the large ones. and i spent NINETY minutes wandering around the foodstuffs, admiring the displays and buying a lot of food. my friends thought i was nuts. it was awesome.
