great post, Steph, as always...
I hope when you were in Portland you went to Powell's (that is wasn't too big and bright)...drinking out of my Powell's mug right now...
Hope you're well wherever you are right now in your US travels...

i have felt this "reverse culture shock" so many times now, and your words describe it so perfectly. especially the part about the flights. when i was 16, i was returning from six weeks in nepal and after about 15 hours on thai airlines (where the flight attendants are perfectly manicured and actually change outfits multiple times during the journey and where they serve you sushi even in the cheapest seats) the transfer to united airlines from lax to jfk was a serious shock to my system. four years later, after returning from 5 months in ecuador, my mom decided that we should spend my first day back going bra shopping. i had a nervous breakdown in the dressing room.

i feel ya stephanie. i'm glad you have so many loving friends and family to bounce around to and make your stay as enjoyable as it can be.

and i love love your photos. thank you for sharing them with all of us.

steph, of course whole post was amazing. but what i related to was your sense of culture shock and the overwhelming part of big and loud. and i thought, OH, that is what i've been feeling. only i don't have the excuse/reason of being in a foreign country. all i know is that it feels Too Much and i think i just want to hang out in a quiet park and not wear shoes on the carpet.
